99p for a pint

Wetherspoon's are selling Greene King IPAi at 99p in there January sale & San Miguel at the same price.

Firstly, I think that's a fair price considering the quality of the beers.   I'd still rather pay the extra quid for a decent pint.

Secondly, I think this just reinforces the idea some people have: "I've got £20 in my pocket - how bladdered can I get?   I know, I'll go to Wetherspoons!"   I am trying to balance this with the idea that if things were really this simple they would just go to Tesco and buy wife-beater at some rediculously cheap price.   I suspect the reality is that a little of both happens.   If you want to get off truly, knuckle draggingly, up-for-a-fight drunk then you will have a few wife-beaters before going out on the town.

Maybe a local tax could be raised by adding £1 to the price of these drinks to pay for extra policing of the immediate areas around them when the trouble starts.   Nothing's ever that simple though, as then logically you would tax blue alcopop £2 extra to pay for extra policing, child support services, A&E staff, & council street cleaners.

Now I'm worried that I'm becoming more right-wing in my old age.

Not 99p everywhere..

Bedford's pubs signed up with the local council on an agreement not to sell beer for less than £1.50 (in the town centre). Sadly the extra 51p doesn't go tell help Bedford's police force / hospitals etc out. It just tries to prevent town centre pubs from pricing tactics that might promote over-drinking.
