Rather than stay in a run-of-the-mill hotel in the town centre, I found this pub in the Good Beer Guide, a mile or so Northi of the town centre & booked a room for a few nights whilst working locally. Four real ales on the bar; Hydes Ringmaster, Caledonian 80/-, Theakston's Black Bull Bitter, Palmer's Copper Alei. All of which were fine & kept well, but not too interesting - all of them were ordinary ales.
The pub is fairly traditional on the inside with food that you'd expect from a decent pub. The staff were friendly & even helped me out on the pub quiz (Monday night) as I was in a team of one. Even their help wasn't enough to get me 50% - still it was just a bit of fun.
In hindsight - now I've discovered that Doncaster has loads of great boozers - I shouldn't have stayed in one outside of town. I should have stayed in the bland hotel & gone to a couple of different pubs each night. Still, you could do a lot worse than this pub.
