My review of this pub may be rose-tinted a little as we had walked from the Honister Pass over the hills, over Haystacks, down to Buttermere & around to this hotel.   It was February & the snow was a few inches deep in places.   It was one of those drinks you have well & truly earnt.

The pub is kind of a cross between a hotel bar & a simple country pub split into a public area & a hotel guest area.   Simply laid out there were four beers on the bar; Black Sheep, Hawkshead Gold, Bridge Bitter (brewed by Hawkshead) & another I don't remember.   The Bridge Bitter was absolutely lovely - I thought it would be similar to the Gold but it wasn't - a golden ale but sweeter & more Turkish delight-like in a way my wife doesn't like at all but I love.   As always, the Hawkshead Gold was great.

The barman was pleasant enough & it was great just to sit down & relax with other walkers whilst sipping good beer.

The views are as you would expect - wonderful - & a flat walk around Buttermere runs just by the hotel if you don't feel the need to go on a good hike across the mountains.

Smashing.
