On Friday night I had 6 Belgian Gueuzes that I'd been saving for the time when myself & 2 sour-head friends were available. We poured them all out at once into pint glasses and tried them a sip at a time in succession. Blimey! By the time we'd finished we were all soured out & needed the strongest home brew IPAi to wash them down with. When it comes to sour beer you can quite easily get too much of a good thing.
Cantillon (5%) - perhaps the most famous one for us & cetainly the most available. Very sour with a smell that once you think of urine you can't shift from your head.
DM scored it 2nd place, MN scored it 1st place & AB scored it 1st place. Overall = 1st place.
Giradin (5%) - another fairly recognisable beer, relatively easy to find. A very sour, lemony acidic beer with a little wheat-like character.
DM scored it 1st place, MN scored it 2nd & AB scored it 2nd. Overall = 2nd place.
Fonteinen (6%) - moderate sourness
DM scored it 4th place, MN scored it 3rd place & AB scored it 3rd place. Overall = 3th place.
Hannsens (6%) - big acidic sourness, lemony.
DM scored it 3rd place, MN scored it 4th place & AB scored it 5th place. Overall = 4th place.
Mariage Parfait (8%) - a new one to me. Moderate sourness, some maltiness.
DM scored it 5th best, MN scored it 5th best & AB scored it 4th best. Overall = 5th place.
Oul Beersel (6%) - not very sour - certainly in comparison to the other 5 - wheaty, some sweetness & a little cardboardy.
DM scored it 6rd place, MN scored it 6th place & AB scored it 6th place. Overall = 6th place.
A previous taste test was carried out on lambic beers here.
