Minimum Price for Alcoholic Drinks

News

From the story in the link above, there is a proposal to bring in a minimum price for alcoholic drinks.   The price would be 50p per unit of alcohol as a minimum.

I welcome this news.   Although I don't  like new rules & regulations, this seems entirely fair.

People (like me) who decide what to drink on taste primarily will not pay any more.   Those who want to get drunk as cheaply as possible will find it not as cheap - & maybe will not get as drunk.   For example; Quality beers such as Black Sheep from the Black Sheep Brewery (4.4%) & Landlord from Timothy Taylor (4.1%) are already in the region of £1.50 - £1.90 a bottle. This represents way over 50p per unit of alcohol (2.20 & 2.05 units of alcohol respectively making the minimum price £1.10 & £1.03).

Compare this to a 440ml can of fizzy lager (3.5%) for 47p.   This represents the problem end of the alcohol market - the one where people drink to get wasted - & it costs 31p per unit.   The minimum price for this would rise to 77p per can.

If you actually like the flavour of cheap fizzy lager (& some people do) then your tipple still isn't exorbitantly expensive but maybe it will push the price of getting so drunk you need hospital treatment out of reach of many teenagers.

An article in the New Scientist magazine seems to agree.

And to me, it seems that this might actually help pubs out too. This proposal would help close the disparity of prices between pubs and Supermarkets. This could encourage a few more people to support their local.
