National Winter Ales Festival, Manchester 2006

Very slickly run beer festival. Lots of darker, heavier winter brews but still plenty of lighter ones for when you want a break from the stout & old ale. Top ales drunk:

Dorothy Goodbody's Wholesome Stout from Wye Valley Brewery - one of my favourite beers
Expresso Stout from Dark Star Brewery - excellent, but I don't think I could handle more than a couple of pints. Lots of flavour.
Telford Porter from the Conwy brewery - good stuff.
Winter Beacon from Breckonshire Brewery - more good stuff.
Dragon Smoke Stout from Beowolf - excellent, very strong in flavour so a half is just nice. Would be impossible to neck this.

There were so many others but time & beer has made them fade from memery.

After the festival we went to the Smithfield Hotel & Bar, who had 8 real ales of which only 2 I had heard of. Nice place but absolutely packed. From there we went to Bar Fringe (I think) which had a good selection of ales & decent lagers - I had a TopArseMan. Again being so close to the festival it was packed.
