National chains of supermarkets used to be crap for decent beer. Shelves and shelves of discounted cooking lager, a whole isle devoted to wine but they stocked more varieties of olive oil than quality beers. Mostly its still true.
However Waitrose have some good quality beers, although anly a small selection. They do a local beer which means that if you have a driving job and need to stop for lunch then you can try beers that you couldn't get back home. Their own label German Weissebier is a superb example of the style.
Sainsbury'si aren't too bad with a large selection of decent beer but mostly by big brands. Maybe only one or two local names.
Tesco were the worst but have improved by stocking decent own brand bottle conditioned beers. The 7 Giraffes beer by Williams Bros is my find of the year so far.
Morrison's have picked up a little too. They are good at premium imported lagers, but the odd unusual British beer sometimes crops up.
Co-Op do one good own brand beer - Bumble Bee by Freeminer - but again the selection isn't too great.
Booth's knock the national chains into a cocked hat, but they only have stores in the Northwest.
