Taste Test: Czech Pilsner

Lageri comes with political baggage. Budweiser Budvar is championed because it is constantly attacked in courts around the world by the American giant over the trading name. Pilsner Urquell had its lagering time shortened when purchased by the international giant SABMiller. Staropramen contains adjuncts and is an anagram of toparseman - with an R left over.

I decided to have a blind tasting to decide my favourite without prejudice interfering. Rhian poured the three lagers whilst I was in another room and I tasted them. I thought the Budvar would be more malty and the other two would have a distinct grassy hoppiness.

Wrong.

All three were excellent and I could barely tell them apart. I decided that Pilsner Urquell was my favourite, but it was so close that on another day one of the others could well win. I didn't guess a single beer correctly.

Rhian's favourite was the Staropramen, declaring the Pilsner Urquell as wishy-washy and not liking the Budvar.
