Wiltshire brewery sells plant to North Koreans

History

Back in 2000 I worked at Ushers of Trowbridge - a regional brewery in Wiltshire which contract brewed for other people mostly.   Miller Genuine Draft was our biggest output ( & quite horrid stuff it was too) alongside Lowenbrau (a decent lager that played rather dishonestly on being European - well Trowbridge is in Europe, right?).   They did brew some very good beer under the Ushers label, but this didn't fill the brewing vats so we brewed other peoples beer for them.

Towards the end the owners realised that despite making a profit, the company could make even more money without the brewery.   They could join the other brewing companies in getting the lowest bidder to brew their brands for them.

The 200 staff were made redundant, the brewing vessels sold to the Koreans & the site has sat there ever since looking a real eyesore to the people of Trowbridge.

We assumed the South Koreans though.   Wrong.   The story by the BBC linked above tells of it being moved across the planet to brew half decent beer for the Northi Koreans.   Plus an advert for the Korean beer is shown.

This does show that the whole world loves beer!
