Poperings - Hommel Bier

Easy drinking with a good balance of hop over a pale, but not too light, finish.

Petrus - Aged Pale
Important: This is NOT to be confused with a true Pale Alei.  Aged for 20 months giving it a little of the sweet acidity of a good gueuze.  Nicely balanced, taking a good combination of flavours from lambic and barley wine influences each without swamping or corrupting the other.  Not to ewveryone's taste, but I like it.

Buffalo - Belgian Stout
Reasonable dry black beer which belies its strength.  Unfortunately missing a depth of flavour which even the popular black beers can manage.  Disappointing.

Swinkels - Volmaakt
Slakes the thirst but that's about the best that can be said about it.  Disappointing malt and hop flavours (which coincidentally are that all-time-favourite: Cascade).

Hoegaarden - Verboten Vrucht (Forbidden Fruit)

Excellent malt over near-perfect sweetness. Low hopped, but that's the point. A beer to treat yourself to.

Hertog Jan - Grand Prestige

Brown-red beer which is even stronger than it tastes. Sweet, but still dry; bitter, but not too harsh. Pretty damn good.

Here's a review of the Howe Sound Brewpub in Squamish - about half a dozen beers brewed here, all about 3 star rating, and all a bit sweet for a UKi taste. They tend to add honey in Canadai. Tonight we drank Mettleman, a reasonable bitter. Last Friday, we had Scotch Alei, nothing like "a pint of heavy", but ok, and Rail Ale, a nut brown ale that is popular here. Price $6.50 a pint, so don't think you're hard done by with the latest UK budget.
